Is Your Work Killing You? 5 Questions to Save Your Life

Table of Contents

Like a micro-ninja in your brain, jabbing at your sanity, your work may be killing you softly.

“I just have to get through this crazy summer,” Michael told me. But he said something similar about the spring.

“Same crap, different day.” We hear it all the time—what an awful way to live.

You deserve better than that. So does your family. So does your team.

We all deserve to have you at your best—enthusiastic, energized, and bringing your unique contribution to the world. But somewhere along the way, you lost your mojo.

It’s time to get it back.

We want the best of you and for you—because when you thrive, we all benefit. Your family, your friends, your team, your clients, your community.

When you’re healthy, happy, productive, and creative, everything gets better. Your leadership is more inspiring, your ideas are sharper, and your energy is contagious.

So how do you turn things around? Start by asking yourself these five critical questions:

1. Are You in the Wrong Job, or Are You in the Job Wrong?

Do you need a change of scenery, or do you need to change how you show up? Sometimes, the problem isn’t the job itself—it’s how you’re approaching it. Get clarity before making a drastic move.

Who can help you evaluate this decision? Do you have a mentor, coach, or mastermind group to offer perspective?

2. Where’s the Next Inspiring Opportunity?

What would get you fired up? What challenge excites you?

If your current path feels stagnant, it’s time to shake things up. What risk do you need to take? What change could open a new door?

3. Who Can Take Something Off Your Shoulders?

Leadership isn’t about doing everything—it’s about making the highest-impact moves.

Delegate and empower. Hand off tasks and resist the urge to take them back in a panic.

Focus on the 20% that drives 80% of the results. Let go of the rest.

4. Where Are the Blocks of Time in Your Day for…

  • Your health (exercise, rest, nutrition)
  • Your top priorities (the work that moves the needle)
  • Your key relationships (family, mentors, your team)
  • Your replenishment (hobbies, fun, time away)

If you don’t schedule time for what matters, it won’t happen.

5. How Am I Complicit in My Own Misery—And What Will I Change Today?

Hard truth: If you’re stuck, you’re playing a role in it.

What limiting beliefs, bad habits, or fears are keeping you in a cycle of stress and exhaustion? Identify them—and break them.
